Introduction to Weaving

Weaving a Scarf on a Rigid Heddle Loom

Welcome to the start of your weaving journey! The practical skill of weaving is both rewarding and useful, allowing you to produce unique, handcrafted items and providing a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment.

At the end of this course, you will be able to warp up a rigid heddle loom and weave a scarf โ€” including how to start and end a piece of weaving and how to finish off for best results.

Course Outline

  • Brief look at the parts and terminology of a rigid heddle loom and the types of weaving it can produce
  • Demonstration of how to warp up a rigid heddle loom
  • Warping up your assigned rigid heddle loom, including colour change
  • Process of starting off the weaving
  • Weaving a scarf, keeping to your pattern
  • Process of taking weaving off the loom
  • Ways of securing ends and finishing off weaving
  • Pathways to continue your weaving journey

What to Bring

  • If you want a particular look for your scarf, bring 3โ€“4 balls of 50gm yarn in your preferred colours โ€” wool or acrylic 8ply works best. We also have various yarns available for your use.
  • Tapestry needle (we can supply one if you don't have one)
  • Scissors
  • Notebook if you wish to take notes
